Her Story
Shalini Modi is an astrologer, author and enthusiast of old Indian scriptures, the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas and epics as she feels that they have a lot to offer. It is her belief that the stories, and philosophy in them are relevant to our lives even today and a parallel can be drawn to any situation in our lives. Knowledge of Vedic astrology, mantra chanting and old scriptures enrich her writing, giving it multiple facets. Her engaging style, unconventional approach and her effort to find symbolism in our old texts makes the read an interesting one.
She brings forth her understanding not only through her writings but through her talks as well. Shalini has been invited as a speaker to varied groups and platforms. She is a published author of four books
Her Journey
Her first published book Shravan, Swar, Darshan; Tales, Chants and Temples has twelve chapters, each dedicated to a universal human desire with a story from the Puranas co-related to a chant and an ancient temple in India. A self-help manual-style book, which can be visited and revisited whenever the need arises.
Her second book, Seven Immortals, was launched in June 2022 with a panel discussion on “Immortality; a boon or a curse?” Eminent artist Mr. Raghu Vyas and Samar Jodha, a known photographer, social activist and installation artist, were the panellists. This event found mention in many digital media platforms like APN News, Kolkata Mail, UNI, United News India, Financial Samachar and more.
Her third book, Rasas in Divine Relationships, uniquely interweaves the concept of emotions, rasas from the Natya Shastra (a treatise on the performing arts) and the lives and stories of deific couples from Puranas and epics to lead as an example. These larger-than-life characters with extraordinary qualities, upon whom we mortals base our belief system, are depicted as being vulnerable to some of the base desires and vices, thereby making them relatable for the present generations.
Her fourth book on the Surya Dev will be published by Rupa Publications in December 2025.
Her Participations
Shalini is one of the positive influencers on Republic TV, bringing forth Indian culture and Sanatan Dharma.
She was a guest speaker at EO, a global network for entrepreneurs, where she was in conversation with Sunita Kohli, an eminent artist, about the expression of mythology through varied forms of art and writing.
The Alka Jalan Foundation, Kolkata, invited Shalini to speak about Rasas and their impact on our lives and those of the Divine.
Shalini was also part of a panel discussion at the Apeejay Kolkata Literature Festival in January 2023. The other panellists were Shobha Tharoor and Neeta Bajoria, and the discussion, titled Past, Present and Future, was an engaging conversation highlighting how the literary works of these three authors connect different time periods. The session was attended by students from many prestigious schools as well as members of the literary fraternity. This event was extensively covered by print and digital media including The Telegraph, The Telegraph in Schools, Live Mumbai, Kolkata Mail, Lucknow Digital, Rajasthan Journal, Patrika, Madhya Pradesh Mirror, and many more.
The Telegraph wrote about the session, “In the session Past, Present, Future, Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan, Shalini Modi and Nita Bajoria joined Oindrilla Dutt and discussed writing for young readers, spanning both earlier times and the future.”

She was a panellist at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet held at Victoria Memorial in January 2024. She shared the stage with Satyarth Nayak, and the topic of discussion was Wisdom of the Puranas.
Shalini was also a panellist at the Apeejay Kolkata Literature Festival 2024. Her co-panellists included chef and author Maria Goretti, author Sonal Ved, UK-based author Julia Roberts, and chef Shaun Kenworthy. The discussion revolved around food, food traditions, and their roots in ancient scriptures and culture, and was titled Table Talk.
United News of India, India’s multilingual news agency, wrote, “Speaking at the book launch session, eminent artist Raghu Vyas said, ‘Seven Immortals by Shalini Modi reflects in-depth research on Hindu mythological epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.’”
Shalini was a panellist at the Orange City Literature Festival 2025, where she participated in three sessions on varied topics. These included Vedic astrology, discussions on her latest book Rasas in Divinity: Emotions and Vulnerabilities in the Stories of Deific Couples, and a session titled The Asura Way with renowned author Anand Neelkanthan.
At the Pune Literature Festival 2025, she was part of a panel discussion with Alka Pande — historian, art curator, and author — where they explored the role of Rasas in divinity.
During the Apeejay Kolkata Literature Festival 2025, Shalini spoke about the role of astrology in our love lives. The session, titled Of Sun Signs and Love Lines: Is It in the Stars?, was moderated by Shobha Tharoor, with Ridhi Bahl — a practicing astrologer and Vastu consultant — as her co-panellist.
She was also part of a panel discussion at the World Book Fair, Delhi, with authors and mythologists Koral Dasgupta and Priyanka Kanthura. The session was moderated by author Kena Shree.
